Francisco de Goya’s (1746-1828) prints are among the most important in art history. The Kunsthalle zu Kiel will be showing some selected prints from its own collection that belong to two famous series: the 1815/16 “Los Disparates” (The Follies) and the 1815-1824 “Taromaquia” (Bullfighting). The joint exhibition of these two print series strikingly conveys the world view and stylistic means of an artist who observed his contemporaries, their vanities and weaknesses with great accuracy.

In these series, Goya’s central motifs are the absurdity of life and social ills as well as cruelty, fear, desperation and death. The artist explored experiences on the fringes of human existence, thereby also probing the artistic and technical limits of what can be represented in an image.
