In 2018, the Schleswig-Holsteinischer Kunstverein is celebrating its 175th anniversary. To mark this occasion, the Kunstverein and the Kunsthalle zu Kiel are jointly hosting the globalocal exhibition.

Freely interpreting the Kunstverein’s founding statutes (“…to disseminate art appreciation and knowledge of art in Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenburg”), the exhibition places selected works from the Kunsthalle collection alongside works by the renowned contemporary artists Cao Fei, Hiwa K and Mika Rottenberg, highlighting both the contrasts and rewarding correlations between them. The guest artists’ markedly contemporary video works have garnered attention at international art shows such as the Venice Biennale and documenta.

With their abundant references, these works impressively illustrate the transcendence of traditional national and cultural boundaries that characterises the present-day global art scene. In Kiel, Hiwa K’s “View from Above” (2017), Cao Fei’s “La Town” (2015), and Mika Rottenberg’s “Minus Yiwu” (2017) serve as associative starting points and loose points of reference. They open up a new view onto a local collection from a perspective sharpened by global trends.

The exhibition shows 61 works (including painting, sculpture, video art, and photography) by 40 artists.
