“We are referring to the classical and figurative art style that was pursued over the centuries, in which artists communicated their emotions and impressions in a way that the artworks remained realistic and firmly anchored in the real world.”

This statement, uttered by the patron couple Karl-Walter and Charlotte Breitling, articulates a lively bond between the fine arts and the personal history of the two collectors. Since 1993, the Kunsthalle zu Kiel has been lucky to have permanent loans at its disposal from the Karl-Walter Breitling and Charlotte Breitling Foundation. As a rule, the holdings in Kiel grow annually through purchases. In the meantime the Kunsthalle has expanded its holdings with seventeen additional paintings and three drawings from the 19th and 20th centuries, boasting works by artists such as Carl Spitzweg, Louis Gurlitt, Erich Heckel, Lovis Corinth, Franz von Lenbach, and Andreas Achenbach.

While the Kunsthalle and its "Stifterkreis" (circle of patrons) focuses on collecting contemporary art, the Breitling Foundation has helped make it possible to augment it with historical masterpieces. The commitment of the patrons Karl-Walter and Charlotte Breitling has enabled us to continually expand the Kunsthalle’s collection of paintings, which was founded by the "Schleswig-Holsteinischer Kunstverein" (Schleswig-Holstein Arts Society) in 1854.

A total of 63 works of Anita Albus – nearly all the artworks that she created until 2004 – are intended to remain at the Kunsthalle as a convolute. Anita Albus lives in Munich and Burgundy (*1942 Munich) and works as a freelance artist and author. For her literary and artistic works she was honored several times. She received the Federal Cross of Merit (2001), the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2009) and 2014 the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art.

At a time in history where the art market is going through a difficult phase, the Karl-Walter Breitling and Charlotte Breitling Foundation welcomes donations and endowment contributions.
