Between history and design - The Old Market as a mirror of Kiel

The Old Market forms the heart of Kiel's historic city centre. This is where people once demonstrated for their independence from Denmark, where the large Nikolai Church, which formed the religious centre of the city, rises, and where Kiel's old town hall stood, which shaped the city's administration and politics for a long time.

Over the decades, this square has undergone profound changes: It was converted into a large car park, crossed by trams and was given a completely new look with the 1972 Olympic sailing competitions. The new cultural city centre was to be created here. It is an impressive example of the special urban transformation that Kiel has undergone and continues to undergo in relation to the city centre. Dr Martin Rackwitz and Rolf Fischer will talk about the exciting history of the Alter Markt and its special features, past and present. The aim is to revitalise the discussion about Kiel's historic centre and open up perspectives for the future.

Rolf Fischer, former State Secretary and political scientist, has published numerous articles and books on Kiel's city and Schleswig-Holstein's regional history. He has been Chairman of the Society for Kiel City History since 2017.

Dr Martin Rackwitz is a historian with a focus on the history of Schleswig-Holstein in the 19th and 20th centuries. His areas of research include the Schleswig-Holstein uprising and the Kiel sailors' revolt of 1918.
