The Kunsthalle’s collection covers a spectrum of works ranging from the Dürer period to international contemporary art.

It comprises around 1,100 paintings, 300 sculptures, more than 30,000 works* in the Prints and Drawings Collection, and photographs and video works. Regularly changing showcase exhibitions of the Kunsthalle’s holdings from all areas of the collection are an integral part of the exhibition programme. 

The collection of the Kunsthalle zu Kiel holds a wealth of works behind which lie fascinating stories. ZDFkultur presents some of them in the interactive online format The Secret of the Pictures:

ZDFkultur invites you to discover important works from museums all over Germany in the continuously expanding series The Secret of the Pictures: By clicking on individual pixels, you can learn exciting and entertaining facts about the creation of the works, about art historical contexts and about the lives of the artists. The content is developed in cooperation with curators from the respective exhibition venues.

 

*So far, the Prints and Drawings Collection, which has not yet been fully recorded, is estimated at 40,000 works. The latest inventories in the process of registering, researching and digitising the collection have estimated that it comprises around 30,000 works.
