#4 Pop-up Kunsthalle zu Kiel
Lu Yang. Electromagnetic Brainology
30 January to 15 March 2026
The Kunsthalle has been closed since autumn 2023. Before construction work begins in spring 2026, the institution will present contemporary art one final time. For this occasion, the private Haus N Collection has generously made its holdings available.
Lu Yang (born 1984; pronouns: he/him) creates immersive digital imagery that engages directly with the exhibition space. His work explores themes including Buddhism, gender, the body, and fundamental aspects of the human condition, with dance as a recurring and central element. Born in Shanghai, Lu Yang studied there and now lives and works between Shanghai and Tokyo.
The colourful video installation ‘Electromagnetic Brainology’, which also extends into public space, combines depictions of Buddhist deities with action figures from the fantasy entertainment franchise ‘Masters of the Universe’, first introduced in the 1980s. Created in 2017 and inspired by the visual language of anime, the work connects Buddhist and Hindu concepts of the four elements—earth, water, fire, and air—with neurological processes of pain in the human brain. Yang frequently incorporates his own image into his work; in this film, it appears as the human protagonist, whose experience of pain forms the emotional core of the piece.
Many thanks to the Haus N. Collection Kiel / Athens!
