Small works by artists from the field of sculpture were initially the most dominant area of the Kunsthalle’s collection of three-dimensional art. Holdings included several works by Ernst Barlach, the bronze Liebende Köpfe (Loving Heads) by Wilhelm Lehmbruck and a self-portrait by Renée Sintenis.
The 1970s saw the beginning of a targeted development in the collection of contemporary sculptures, object art and room-related installations. Today, the Kunsthalle zu Kiel owns works by artists such as Alicja Kwade, Arman, Joseph Beuys, Per Kirkeby, François Morellet and Günther Uecker.
