Artists and patrons of the arts founded the Schleswig-Holstein Art Association in 1843. It laid the foundation stone for the collection of the Kunsthalle zu Kiel and has over 1,300 members today. From the very beginning, the goal of the association was to offer all those interested in art the opportunity to view it together and exchange ideas. Since its founding, it has been closely associated with Kiel University, and even in the 19th century, numerous professors were members.

Shortly after the association was founded, there were plans for the construction of an art gallery. Members initially built the first gallery on Dänische Straße in Kiel at their own expense; in 1857, the Kunstverein celebrated its inauguration. The Kunsthalle building today overlooking the Firth of Kiel was possible due to the legacy of Lotte Hegewisch, who was also a member of the Schleswig-Holstein Art Association.

Today, the association supports exhibition projects at the Kunsthalle, offers educational programmes and discussion evenings, and presents its own exhibitions at intermittent intervals. Gatherings for members foster an exchange about art, involve trips and excursions and provide insights into current regional art events and those abroad.
