Chiharu Shiota
An exhibition of the Schleswig-Holstein Art Association
3 January to 29 April 2012
From 2012 onwards, the Kunstverein will present a young artistic position once a year at a fixed location in the Kunsthalle.
The Kunstverein's exhibition series kicked off with a spatial installation conceived especially for the Kunstverein: Chiharu Shiota works with performances, is associated with theatre, draws and designs expansive installations. An essential feature of her works is the use of black cotton threads into which she weaves tables, clothes, a piano or even herself, among other things. The resulting network of black lines looks like a drawing in space. Associations with lifelines, communication or memory arise.
The room becomes a stage, as it were. This special way of perceiving the body and space, as well as the performative act of her works, also reflect the influence of her teachers Rebecca Horn and Marina Abramovic.
For the exhibition at the Kunsthalle zu Kiel, Chiharu Shiota developed a new, room-filling installation, which, like her other works, was temporary, i.e. only on view for the duration of the exhibition.
